I bring you greetings from California the reproductive tourism capital of the world, where Elton John and his partner David Furnish came, not once, but twice to buy their children. They paid women and exploited them for their eggs. They paid women and exploited them for their uteruses. The literally bought their children who will never know their mothers or be loved by their mothers.

This past October, an American surrogate, Brooke Brown and the twins she was carrying for a couple in Spain died. Premila Vaghela, a poor 30 year old woman in India, also died as a result of surrogacy. So far, there has been no investigation or answers. Women deserve more. Children deserve more. Women deserve better. Children deserve better.

And now, right now in California, we have two women, both hired as surrogate mothers and both with three babies. Brittneyrose Torres is a surrogate whose babies were commissioned by an heterosexual married couple. Melissa Cook is a surrogate also pregnant with three babies, hired by a single gay man.  Both and are being asked to “terminate” the lives of one of their babies for convenience. There is nothing wrong with the babies. There is nothing wrong with the pregnancy. These are children who are just not wanted – and the mothers are being bullied into killing a baby for no reason other than the fact that the commissioning parents want two, not three.

  • Surrogacy is an exploitation of women.  It enslaves women and treats them as paid breeders.
  • Surrogacy is violence against women, risking their health and endangering their well-being.
  • Surrogacy treats children as commodities, to be bought and sold, to be designed to our liking, and to be discarded when we decide we no longer want them. It’s an industry that caters to the wants and desires of parents with no concerns for the needs of the children created from it.
  • The practice of commercial surrogacy is indistinguishable from the buying and selling of children.
  • There is no essential difference between commercial surrogacy and altruistic surrogacy, both constitute a violation of the human rights of the child.
  • While I am sympathetic to the desires of people to have a child, no one has a right to a child, whether they are heterosexual, homosexual, or single-by-choice. The child is a subject of rights not a product subject of trade.

When I leave Rome, I will be traveling to Paris, France, to attend a very important conference whose goal is for the universal abolition of all surrogacy in Europe! Feminist leaders like Kajsa Ekis Eckman from Sweden, Alice Schwarzer from Germany, and Sylviane Agacinski of France will gather to throw light on and fight against the unjust practice of surrogacy which infringes on fundamental human rights.

Surrogacy is a business, an industry, with billions of dollars in profit – and what is the business? The business is hiring women who will be exploited and used to produce babies that will be sold to people all over the world.

Surrogacy often depends on the exploitation of poorer women. In many cases, it is the poor who have to sell and the rich who can afford to buy. These unequal transactions result in consent that is under informed if not uninformed, low payment, coercion, poor health care, and severe risks to the short- and long-term health of women who sell their eggs or carry surrogate pregnancies.

Simply put, surrogacy must be stopped because it is an abuse of women’s and children’s human rights. Surrogacy is already forbidden in many countries and contradicts many international conventions and agreement. We must stand together asking national governments of the world and leaders of the international community to work together to Stop Surrogacy Now.
